San Sebastiano: resiliente come un ulivo

Nell’opera di Gianvito Turi, San Sebastiano non è soltanto un martire trafitto, ma una figura che si innalza e si radica come un albero d’ulivo, pianta simbolo della terra salentina, da sempre emblema di forza, resistenza e rinascita.

L’intuizione dell’artista è quella di trasformare il corpo del santo in un organismo vegetale, dove le frecce non lo feriscono ma diventano rami, si intrecciano con le membra, germogliano foglie. Il dolore non viene negato, ma trasfigurato in nuova vita.

Il riferimento alla prima condanna a morte di Sebastiano, a cui sopravvisse miracolosamente, si carica così di un valore metaforico: il santo come l’ulivo che, pur colpito, continua a vivere, resiste alle intemperie, si rigenera. L’albero e l’uomo diventano un tutt’uno, in una sintesi poetica e potente.

La scelta cromatica – i verdi profondi dello sfondo, il bianco della veste, l’arancione intenso del corpo – comunica una sacralità arcaica, evocando le icone cristiane e al contempo la forza materica della natura. Il segno grafico, deciso e armonico, costrui- sce un’immagine che unisce simbolismo e modernità.

Questa rappresentazione visiva di San Sebastiano è un inno alla resilienza, alla capacità di resistere e trasformarsi. Un omaggio alla fede, ma anche alla terra che lo venera, Racale, dove gli ulivi raccontano da secoli storie di lotta e sopravvivenza.

Saint Sebastian: resilient like an olive tree

In the work of Gianvito Turi, Saint Sebastian is not merely a pierced martyr, but a figure who rises and takes root like an olive tree — a symbol of the Salento region, long emblematic of strength, resilience, and rebirth.

The artist’s intuition lies in transforming the saint’s body into a vegetal organism, where the arrows do not wound but become branches, intertwining with his limbs and sprouting leaves. Pain is not denied, but transfigured into new life.

The reference to Sebastian’s first death sentence — from which he miraculously survived — thus takes on a metaphorical value: the saint as an olive tree that, though struck, continues to live, resists the storms, and regenerates. Tree and man become one, in a poetic and powerful synthesis.

The color palette — deep greens in the background, the white of the robe, the intense orange of the body — conveys an archaic sense of sacredness, evoking Christian icons while also expressing the raw power of nature. The graphic line, bold and harmonious, constructs an image that blends symbolism and modernity.
