San Sebastiano, il martirio nella forma del frammento

Chiara Morra reinterpreta la figura di San Seba- stiano spogliandola dell’iconografia tradizionale e concentrandosi su un unico, eloquente frammento: un braccio che stringe le frecce del martirio.

La scelta della sineddoche — parte per il tutto — diventa atto di resistenza visiva. Il santo non è rappresentato nel corpo trafitto, ma nel gesto della presa, in quell’istante silenzioso in cui il dolore si trasforma in memoria e presenza.

L’illustrazione fonde spiritualità bizantina e linguaggio grafico contemporaneo: le linee geometriche, i colori saturi e la luce diffusa evocano la dimensione sacra senza necessità di narrazione.
L’oro richiama la luce divina, il rosso l’intensità del sacrificio. Le frecce non sono più solo strumenti di morte, ma diventano segni, simboli, frammenti di una storia collettiva.

Questa visione ridotta e simbolica invita lo spettatore a una contemplazione nuova: non ciò che si mostra, ma ciò che si evoca. È nel frammento che la fede prende forma. È nel silenzio del gesto che si ascolta il grido della storia.

Saint Sebastian, martyrdom in the form of a fragment

Chiara Morra reinterprets the figure of Saint Sebastian, stripping it of its traditional iconography and focusing on a single, eloquent fragment: an arm clutching the arrows of martyrdom.

The choice of synecdoche — the part for the whole — becomes an act of visual resistance. The saint is not depicted as a pierced body, but through the act of holding, in that silent instant when pain is transformed into memory and presence.

The illustration merges Byzantine spirituality with contemporary graphic language: geometric lines, saturated colors, and diffused light evoke the sacred dimension without the need for narration. Gold recalls divine light, red the intensity of sacrifice. The arrows are no longer mere instruments of death, but become marks, symbols, fragments of a collective story.

This reduced and symbolic vision invites the viewer to a new kind of contemplation: not what is shown, but what is evoked. It is in the fragment that faith takes shape. It is in the silence of the gesture that the cry of history is heard.
