San Sebastiano: la sospensione del martirio

L’illustrazione di Alessandra De Cristofaro è un’opera di grande forza simbolica e leggerezza formale.

La figura di San Sebastiano, disegnata con un corpo completamente bianco, si staglia al centro della scena, appoggiata a un albero e colpita da frecce che, come dichiarato dall’artista, sembrano ancora sospese nell’aria, in un momento che precede il dolore.
Questo dettaglio conferisce alla composizione un’aura di sospensione temporale, come se il martirio non fosse ancora compiuto, ma solo evocato.

La scelta del bianco per il corpo non è casuale: simboleggia la purezza, l’innocenza e la spiritualità. Il bianco, inoltre, lo separa cromaticamente dal fondo blu intenso, creando un effetto quasi visionario.
Il blu, colore associato al sacro e all’inconscio, raf- forza l’idea di una scena sospesa tra terra e cielo. La colomba, posta dietro San Sebastiano, richiama la speranza e la pace, come una promessa futura, in netto contrasto con la violenza delle frecce che lo circondano.
Le piante ai lati e le tonalità vivaci ma armoniose creano una natura accogliente, più onirica che reale, che sembra proteggere piuttosto che minacciare. In questa composizione, De Cristofaro riesce a restituire la dimensione umana e spirituale del santo non attraverso il dolore esplicito, ma attraverso la grazia della sospensione e il potere evocativo del colore.

Saint Sebastian: the suspension of martyrdom

Alessandra De Cristofaro’s illustration is a work of great symbolic power and formal lightness.

The figure of Saint Sebastian, drawn with an entirely white body, stands at the center of the scene, leaning against a tree and pierced by arrows that, as the artist states, still appear suspended in the air—capturing a moment that precedes pain.
This detail gives the composition a sense of temporal suspension, as if the martyrdom has not yet occurred but is only being evoked.

The choice of white for the body is deliberate: it symbolizes purity, innocence, and spirituality. Moreover, the white visually separates him from the deep blue background, creating an almost visionary effect.
The blue, a color associated with the sacred and the unconscious, reinforces the idea of a scene suspended between earth and sky.
The dove placed behind Saint Sebastian evokes hope and peace, as a promise of what is to come, in stark contrast to the violence of the surrounding arrows.

The plants on either side and the vibrant yet harmonious tones create a welcoming nature—more dreamlike than real—that seems to protect rather than threaten.
In this composition, De Cristofaro manages to convey the human and spiritual dimension of the saint not through explicit suffering, but through the grace of suspension and the evocative power of color.
